A Crisis of Spirit
Choke…chug…sputter. I knew I should have put gas in the Jeep. Now what would be the best course of action? Keeping the air conditioning off might buy
me some distance. Ugh. Driving in triple-digit temperatures was
not a pleasant thought. Sweltering air
flowed into the hot vehicle through the open window. Driving slowly made more sense than trying
to speed up, because the faster I drove the more gas I would use. Creeping along put my nerves on edge. I was hot, I was stressed, and I was running on fumes. It would be so easy to turn on the air
conditioning, hit the gas and get to the gas station quickly. But when one is operating on fumes one must
take extra precautions. I found myself
wondering if these extra precautions might prove to be too little too late. Had the proper maintenance been done in the first
place I wouldn’t be in this boat…er…uh…Jeep.
Proper maintenance shouldn’t be so difficult, should it? It seems to me that you just need to do a few
things and be intentional about them.
According to the manual, while providing proper maintenance I needed
to be aware of: fluid levels, the brake system, windshield wipers and the
electrical system. It doesn’t mention fuel. Oh, wait a minute,
here it is on page 116 under “Starting and Operating.” Listed last among other ways to minimize
the possibility of catalytic converter damage it says, “Do not allow the
vehicle to run out of fuel.” I don’t even
know what a catalytic converter is. I
just know that it’s 108 degrees and I don’t want to
sit alone on the side of the road with an empty gas tank. As I come to the stop sign the engine sputters
again. I pray there will be enough
fumes to get me around the corner and into the gas station. I’m not out of the woods yet. Careful not
to hit the gas pedal too hard, I turn the corner. One more sputter and I’m coasting up to the
pump. I made
it! I’m out of the woods. At least for now. Choke….chug…sputter. This was the sound of my spiritual life one
bright summer morning. I knew I should
have done something when I realized I was beginning to feel drained. Instead I just put my self-care aside and
kept plugging along. Then when life
heated up, as it has a way of doing, I realized I needed to start up my
spiritual engine. Proper
maintenance? Well, of course! It sounds so easy to be intentional about
the basics: eat right, get plenty of sleep, take vitamins, exercise, reserve time for daily prayer and devotional. But the truth of the matter is, it isn’t as easy as it sounds, or at least it isn’t for
me. It’s
incredible to me how easy it is to run out of fuel, not just in the Jeep but
also in my spiritual life. I would
find it sadly interesting to know how many days out of a year I spiritually
run on fumes. Empty, tired,
frustrated. How does this happen? Why aren’t I better at regular maintenance? I found
myself in a crisis of spirit. We hear
about someone having a mental breakdown.
An emotional breakdown. A
nervous breakdown. Well, I experienced
a spiritual breakdown. I was at
the end of my rope, questioning my entire relationship with God.
“So what’s
the big deal?” you ask. I am a
pastor. That sounds bad doesn’t
it? How could a minister allow such a
thing to happen? After all, aren’t
clergy supposed to be a spiritual cut above the rest? Don’t we have a special connection with
God? NO. Ministers are people too, we laugh, we cry, we bleed, we die.
We have the same spiritual connection that everyone else has to God.
With the proper maintenance we too can have thriving spiritual lives. Without that maintenance we too can find
ourselves running on fumes. When
training to become clergy I was taught to be ready to preach, pray or die at
a moment’s notice. I was not taught,
however, how to have a personal spiritual life. This lapse in my training and education had
come back to haunt me. *If
you are interested in hearing more about this venture, or if you are
experiencing your own “crisis of spirit”, mark Monday March 2nd on
your calendar and attend the workshop:
