Thought for May

“It’s always interesting to me that clergy and churches are willing to talk about angels and spirits but they never want to talk about the paranormal”

-Grant Wilson (TAPS)

Reflections of a Paranormal Investigator

Whenever I’m asked “What is your favorite class/workshop to teach?” undoubtedly I respond, “GHOST HUNTING 101”. As a psychic and medium, I have been seeking the paranormal since waking up as a child to see an angel sitting on the headboard of the bed, watching me. There were also many stories about my Aunt Ema’s home including: footsteps, doors opening and closing on their own, the dome lights found on in locked cars in the driveway, and items disappearing—later found in a trunk in the attic. These “happenings” attracted me more than frightened me.

On April 5, 2008 I had the opportunity to go on a ghost hunt at The Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. I was the first one in the door around 6:00pm, and the last one out at 6:00am the next morning! Life would never be the same as I had moved from inquisitive to a paranormal investigator.

My favorite haunts include visits to: the Myrtles Plantation (St. Francisville, LA), New Orleans,, the Crescent Hotel (Eureka Springs, AR), The Mansfield Reformatory (Mansfield, Ohio), Atchison, Kansas, the Mantorville Opera House, (Mantorville, Mn), the Anderson House (Wabasha, Mn), The Spaghetti Factory (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), a historic farm (near Estherville, Iowa), the gypsy cemetery in Algona, Iowa, and some wonderful quaint and abandoned cemeteries in SE Minnesota.

My favorite ghost hunting equipment includes dowsing rods, infra red camera, camcorder, KII meter, and digital voice recorder. My one regret is that I only have 2 hands to juggle it all in! J I would love to have a hand-held thermal imaging camera, but the cost is prohibitive at this time.

Primarily on an investigation, I open my third eye and then use my psychic and medium gifts to make connections. I use the equipment to back and prove these connections whenever possible.

What makes me different from most other ghost hunters is my desire to connect and converse with spirits. If they need help crossing over, I want to offer such help. Often the first thing I hear is: “You can see me can’t you? What happened to me? Why am I here?” My life-partner teases that I am a counselor and pastor to the dead. That is often very true.

I have found that some investigations are filled with personal experiences and evidence, while others are just…well….dead. I must say, however, that it’s important to not assume anything based solely on how I feel. Recently, at the Algona gypsy cemetery, where eight people were buried alive, I was not feeling my best. After an hour and a half I announced that there was “nothing here”. Upon reviewing our evidence, we found an awesome EVP (electronic voice phenomena) that occurred within minutes of our arrival! A male voice said, “Just do your work—then go.”

There’s always more to learn in the field of paranormal investigating! For more information, or if you have a place you would like investigated, contact me or go to: www.ripmn.com (The Rochester Investigators of the Paranormal). I am one of the founders of this group, and can assure you we are professional and seeking evidence rather than drama. J I also encourage you to sign up for one of the two ghost hunting classes I will be teaching for Community Education this fall.

Metropolitan Community Churches are a forty-year denomination. www.mccchurch.org On their website, under Education and then Small Group Studies, you will find three of Nancy’s workshops. These can be downloaded free of charge and include a complete leader’s guide:

The Eight Essentials For a Healthy and Thriving Congregation is an eight session class designed for churches.

The Eight Essentials For a Healthy and Thriving Congregation; Developing a Strategy for Success is the sequel and provides the ground work for putting the Eight Essentials into action.

Putting a Little Character into Christmas was written to add some educational fun to the Advent Season. Again, it is relative to the Christian church.

Open Hearts, Open Doors; Opening the Doors to the Transgender Community Again, this course is relative to the Christian church and available for free download, complete with a detailed leader’s guide. You will find this one under Transgender (on the far left column of the website).

If you, your church or organization are seeking a workshop, please contact me. I can custom write it for you and teach it myself or write a leadership guide so you can teach it yourself. One such idea is for The Eight Essentials for a Healthy and Thriving Organization. This would be the same concepts without the Christian influence and biblical references.

Curriculum Development (under construction)

Ghost Hunting 301: This class will be the sequel to Ghost Hunting 101, and 201. The first two classes are a prerequisite. This class will involve an actual ghost hunt with a professional ghost hunting team.

Date, Time and Location TBA
